Check your score free — official channels only
Every credit bureau in India must give you one free full report per year. Use the official websites of CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark directly — never share your PAN with unofficial "instant score" sites. Many bank apps and UPI apps also show a free monthly score. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and never lowers it.
What actually moves the score
- Payment history (~35%): one 30-day late payment can cost 50–100 points. Autopay at least the minimum due, always.
- Utilisation (~30%): stay under 30% of your card limit; ask for a limit increase instead of opening new cards.
- Credit age: never close your oldest card.
- Hard enquiries: space out loan applications — several within weeks reads as credit-hungry.
The 6-month improvement plan
- Month 1: pull all four bureau reports; dispute errors online (bureaus must resolve in 30 days).
- Months 1–6: automate every payment; drop utilisation below 30%; apply for nothing new.
- Review quarterly: most people with no defaults see meaningful gains within two quarters.
Why this matters for gadget EMIs
The difference between a 700 and a 760 score is routinely 2–4 percentage points on a personal loan — on a ₹60,000 laptop-and-phone purchase over 24 months, that's real money. Better scores also unlock pre-approved card EMI offers at lower conversion rates.
